I was moved to write after seeing Tamsin's 'Other Lives' piece in the Guardian. When I was a student on the social work course at University of Edinburgh, Joyce was my supervisor on my placement at the "Sick Kids" children's hospital. My strongest memory is her combination of keen intelligence and kindliness, just what was needed in my case. She set a high standard of supervision which I did experience again, but not often, and tried my best to emulate in my own work. I will always cherish fond memories of Joyce. As a boy I spent Christmas Eve afternoon at the Lishman house many times, and she always made things really fun for us all. As I got to know her better over the years that followed, that sense of fun was always present and we shared many laughs around the dinner table during evenings at 458. She was a thoughtful, warm-hearted and generous person, and will be very much missed.

I was a close friend and colleague of Joyce for about 30 years. Despite the immense sadness, I have lots of happy memories of Joyce. As Tamsin correctly noted in her excellent obituary published in the Guardian, Joyce was a superb hostess. I remember giving a speech at her retirement party in her home. It was a wonderful evening with the house full of friends and colleagues. Roly did a sterling job topping up everyone’s wine glasses. Joyce was full of compassion and wisdom. I loved her dearly and will miss her terribly. I was privileged to have her in my life.

Joyce was always a supportive and wise help to me in my role at Aberlour. Her thoughtful and measured approach was always useful and she was so wise when supporting the team with practice improvements. I appreciated her 'check ins' in the early days of my tenure as Chief Executive and I was struck by how she instinctively knew when a supportive and warm chat was needed. When we think of Joyce, we remember her smile. She gave us the feeling that there was always an open door for us. Through the long-lasting friendship with our parents, our families were closely connected over many years and we are grateful for this relationship. I was a colleague of Joyce's at RGU for many year and enjoyed many of her Pizza and Fizz parties on the 'Bridge'! Now I will refer to her commitment to international partners and friends; she appointed me as the School European Co-ordinator (2002 - 2011) and we worked closely together on the School's Erasmus Partnerships which had its own academic & practice challenges. On one occasion there was a little local difficulty with our Belgium partner and she kindly agreed to come with me on a day visit to Antwerp for some diplomatic problem solving; the task duly done and after a long day found ourselves on the Heathrow to Aberdeen flight; we sunk gratefully into our seats and Joyce looked at me and said "Gin and Tonic time" - Absolutely! Joyce and I met in 1968 on placement at Dingleton Hospital in Melrose when we were very young, idealistic and full of energy! We were both embarking on a social work career in Edinburgh and for almost 10 years, until she moved north to Aberdeen and I moved south to Yorkshire and then Suffolk, we shared many happy times together. True friendships forged in one’s 20’s last a lifetime and, although our meetings grew inevitably more and more infrequent, whenever we rang or saw each other the years melted away. I feel her loss keenly and will always be grateful for her warmth, her delightful companionship and for the friendship we shared. Aileen

Dear Joyce , One of the brightest and best whose consistent cheerfulness ,friendship and response to any hint of a need for company means her memory will be treasured by all of the "Fulford house lot" who were lucky enough to share her start at university.
